The 17th Regiment of Foot was formed in 1688 and served under various colonels' names until designated 17th Leicestershire in 1751. From October 1778 through July 16, 1779, the 17th Regiment was on garrison duty at Fort Independence and the fortifications at Stony Point, N.Y.
